Treasured Material Usage Regulations

  • The "Treasured Material" here means the materials collected in the Library deemed treasurable. Such materials include books, manuscripts, letters, newspaper clippings, diaries, photos, school history material, and other cultural relics.
  • The Treasured Materials at the library may not be borrowed. To retrieve the materials, an application must be submitted and accepted at least a week before the planned usage date, unless the applicant has special timing needs. Retrieving treasured materials must be processed during the Library's opening times. Up to 5 types of 20 items may be retrieved per person per day.
  • Treasured materials that have not reached the year to be made public cannot be retrieved. The following materials may not be retrieved in general:
    • Materials not in a good state and have not be repaired.
    • Materials that are already preserved digitalized or have been duplicated in other ways.
    • Manuscripts and rare books.
    • Material that is by law or according to a contract not eligible for retrieving.
    • Other materials that are deemed not suitable to be retrieved by the Library.
    The yearbooks of NTHU may only be retrieved by alumni (retrieval limited to the year of their graduation) and school units for official business.
  • Applicators that have an approved application must present an identification card to retrieve the materials.
  • Treasured materials are subject to be used in places the Library has designated and must comply to the following rules:
    • Before the use, please wash your hands and dry them off thoroughly. If needed, the Library will demand a glove and a mask be put on.
    • The materials must be used within the designated area.
    • Any marks or handwriting must not be left on the treasured materials.
    • Please do not apply pressure on the treasured materials with your hands or any other item. Do not hold any writing materials in proximity to the treasured materials, pencils not included.
    • When accessing treasured materials, lay the material flat on a surface. Do not hold it upright, slanted, or roll the material up.
    • When flipping through the treasured material, please do so gently and slowly. Flip from the bottom of the page.
    • Any action that has the potential to damage or destroy the treasured material must be avoided.
    • Do not carry a camera or any recording equipment when accessing treasured materials.
    • A scanner, a portable printer, or any equipment that is designed to copy are not permitted.
    • Patrons are subject to a baggage check by library personnel when they leave.
    If the treasured material is defaced, damaged, or unlawfully brought out of the library, the patron's library rights will be suspended immediately (according to the NTHU Library Violation Handling Guidelines) ,liable to compensation for the defaced and destroyed materials, and permanently suspended from retrieving materials.
  • Patrons that wish to duplicate the treasured materials must apply to the Library and specify the purposes, usages, and means.Patrons must be aware of infringements.
    Duplicating means to copy, to print, to record, to photograph, or to digitalize parts of or all of the materials. Only the library can decide how and how much the material can be duplicated.
    Patrons might be subject to fees for duplicating materials.
  • The following items are not to be duplicated:
    • Items that are already digitalized or have already duplications.
    • The preservation state of the item is not suitable for duplication.
    • Items are deemed not to be duplicated by the Library.
  • If the treasured materials are referenced in a literary work or research, "NTHU Treasured Materials" must be indicated. A copy of the work must also be freely given to the library.
  • If the patron wishes to borrow the treasured materials for exhibition, an application must be submitted to the Library 3 months prior to the day of exhibition. The exhibition period can not be longer than 6 months. If needed, a renewal application must be submitted one month prior to the end date of the exhibition. A contract is to be drawn up for treasured materials to be borrowed for exhibition. Out-of-school units should apply insurance for the treasured materials prior to signing a contract.
    The treasured materials to be borrowed are subject to the following considerations:
    • The borrowing unit should be a non-profit organization.
    • The treasured material has already been logged into and catalogued in the library.
    • The treasured material is in good state.
    • Does not involve legal restrictions.
    • When the treasured materials are lent abroad, the borrowing unit must guarantee that it will return to Taiwan and is not subject to judicial seizure terms and conventions.
    • The borrowing unit is able to provide a complete preserving environment.
    • The borrowing unit has a good borrowing record.
    • If the treasured material has already been digitalized or duplicated, the digitalized copy will be lent first.
    • Whether or not the library is currently in use of the treasured materials.
    • Whether or not the exhibition area is suffering from major dangers.
    • Other considerations involving the rightful use of the treasured materials.
