Introduction It is generally thought that there are few metaphysicians in Taiwan’s philosophical circles, but if we take a closer look at the research conducted by our fellow philosophers, we find that  a great many research topics in which they are interested are related to metaphysics.  The misconception is caused, on the one hand, by the ambiguity of what philosophers mean by the term metaphysics and, on the other hand, by the fact that it is very hard to identify the study objects and domains of metaphysics.  The first source of confusion regarding the meaning of metaphysics is that philosophers assign to the term various temporal adjectives, such as “classical” and “contemporary.”   Classical metaphysics focuses on investigating the structure of the world from a  transcendental  viewpoint; contemporary metaphysics, in contrast, aims to inquire about the internal structure of our understanding of the world.  Although these two conceptions of metaphysics are at opposite poles, they have a common metaphysical theme; they both are concerned with the interaction between human beings and the world.  The second source of confusion is that many Taiwan’s philosophers proclaim that their research involves no metaphysical interest; they generally regard what they do as the study of a certain philosopher’s idea, a philosophical school’s position, or a specific division of philosophy, such as the philosophy of science; but a closer look shows that their actual work does not conform to their description of it.  Our idea is that if we closely examine the changes that have occurred historically in the meaning of metaphysics and adopt a looser interpretation of its meaning, then we may discover that there are many philosophers in Taiwan who are interested in metaphysics.  This discovery may prove to illustrate that philosophers from each subdivision—such as philosophers of science and moral philosophers—may buy books that are related to metaphysical topics that are relevant to their own research.  Therefore, it is no wonder that books with metaphysical titles are widely dispersed in Taiwan’s academic libraries.  The main purpose of our proposed book-purchase project is to establish a relatively complete database of those monographs that are related to metaphysics titles so that this consolidated resource can be used by scholars as a research and teaching support. Our proposed project is a three-year project.  This project’s tentative book list is roughly arranged along two dimensions: the dimension of philosophers and the  dimension of philosophical themes.  There are two criteria for a book to be listed: if the book is related to the topic of a certain philosopher, the criterion would be the importance of the philosopher and the impact the philosopher has had in the development of philosophy; if the book is about a certain topic in metaphysics, the criterion would be the degree of relevance of the topic to contemporary metaphysics.  Although these two criteria are different, they are closely related.
