I. Searching the materials and viewing your records

Q: How do I know if the Library has the material I need?

A:Please go to Collections and Resources on the home page of the Library website, then select Library Online Catalog to search if the Library have the book, journal, or multimedia material you are looking for. If the material you are looking for is already checked out, you can place it on hold.

 

Q:How do I check on my user status and review my borrowing history?

A: Go to the Librarys homepage and follow these steps below:

  1. Select View your records.Select the code for the Library of your membership.
  2. Enter the barcode at the bottom of your university ID card, leaving out the dash (for example, if your ID number is 890101-0, enter 8901010; if it is A00001-0, enter A000010). Or you can enter the barcode on the borrowing card issued by your library.
  3. Enter your password. If you are a student and have not changed your password, enter your personal national identity number. If you work for the University, enter your employee badge number. Dont forget to capitalize the first letter of your ID or employee badge number.

You can access the following services from your account online: view the materials you have checked out and your borrowing history, renew materials, cancel holds, change password and edit your personal information.

 

 

Q:I forgot my password. What should I do?

A: Bring your student or employee ID card to the circulation desk of the Main Library during regular library hours, and we will be glad to help you reset your password.

Q:The Library Online Catalog indicates that a material is available, but I am unable to find it on the shelf. What should I do?

A: Go to the reference desk of the Library and fill out a Missing Items Form. Our staff will look for the item on the same day. If the item isnt found, we will then check a total of 4 times (once per week) and notify you of the result. If the item is found, you will be notified by email.

II. Borrowing and renewing

 

Q:The material I am looking for is already checked out. How can I place a hold on it?

A: You can place a material on hold online or in person by going to the circulation desk of the Library. Toreserve online, click on the Accession No. of the material from the search result of Library Online Catalog, and you will be notified by email when the material is returned to the Library. To collect the material, go to the circulation desk on the first floor of the Main Library with your library card. You must collect your material within three days of being notified, or you will be in violation of library regulations (not including Saturdays, Sundays or University holidays). If you do not collect the material, you will lose your priority borrowing privilege, and a record will be left on your account. Users who accumulate three occurrences will have their hold-privileges frozen for 30 days.

Q: When I try to place a material on hold, why does it say this account has expired?

A: If you havent signed the Statement of Patrons Privileges, you are unable to borrow materials from the Library. Once youve signed the statement, you will be able to borrow and reserve materials on the following day.

Q: If Ive already received a collection notification for a material I reserved, can I still cancel the reservation?

A:If youve received a notification but are unable to collect the material, you can cancel the reservation before the stipulated deadline (as listed in the notification) through your online account. For example, if the deadline for collection is August 15, there will be no penalty as long as the reservation is cancelled before midnight of that day. If you miss the deadline, the material will not be held and your failure to collect the material record will be noted on your account. If you fail to collect holds three times, your hold privileges will be suspended for 30 days.

Q:How can Irenew library materials?

A: You can renew materials online without having to go tothe Library in person! Please go to the Librarys homepage and follow these steps for online renewal:

  1. Go to View your records.Select the code for the Library of your membership.

You can only renew materials within the final 10 days before they are due, given that no other user has reserved them.

Q:Why did I receive an email asking me to return a borrowed material before its due date?

A: According to the Librarys recall regulations, if a user reserves a material that has been checked out, the materials due date will be affected as follows:

For items due in more than 14 days, the due date will be shortened to 14 days and the current borrower will be notified by email.

For items due within 14 days, the due date will remain unchanged.

III. Using the databases and e-journals

 

Q:How do I access the Librarys databases when I am outside the University campus?

A: Nearly all of the Librarys databases can be accessed from outside the University campus. Due to access restrictions governed by resource purchase agreements, the service is restricted to the use of the NationalTsingHuaUniversity faculty, researchers, students, staff, research assistants, and other authorized users. Users must setup connections prior to accessing online library resources, as well as use their library card number and password for authorization verification. Simply go to the Librarys website, select Electronic Resources, and then Off-campus Access Setup.After logging in, enter your library user ID and password.

Q:How do I set up my personal computer to access the librarys databases when I am on the University campus?

A:The Library provided the EZ-Proxy service. To use the electronic resources on campus, your havnt to set up your personal computer, just go to the Librarys homepage to click the Electronic Resources.

IV. UST (University System of Taiwan) Library Services .

Q: What is the UST (University System of Taiwan) Library Interlibrary circulation service ?

A: All faculty, staff, and students of the NationalTsingHuaUniversity can use this service and access the materials held by the NationalChiaoTungUniversity, NationalCentralUniversity, and NationalYangMingUniversity. Materials borrowed from this service can be returned at the National Tsing Hua University Library.

Q:How do I apply for the UST Inter-library circulation service?

A:Follow these steps:

(1) Search the Library collection: search each library catalog of UST for the material you need.

(2) Fill out a UST borrowing form: click on the library you wish to borrow from and fill out the required information online. When you are finished, send it to the appropriate university.

Note the following when collecting materials: the lending university will contact you via email within three days of receiving your request and will send the requested material to the National Tsing Hua University Library. You must collect the material at the circulation desk on the 1st floor of the Main Library before the deadlinespecified in the notification, as the material will not be held for you after the date. Those who fail to collect a material before deadline twice will have their privilege of using the UST inter-library circulation service suspended for six months.

Q: What are the regulations for using the UST Inter-Library circulation service ?

A: The UST Inter-Library circulation regulations are as follows:

You can borrow up to fiveitems, which can be borrowed for 30 days and renewed once. You can reserve up to fiveitems at once. Audiovisual materials cannot be borrowed through the UST Inter-Library circulation service and can only be used within the libraries of each university. Each university library may have its own additional regulations .

Q:I am a NationalTsingHuaUniversity user. What account number and password should I use to reserve books through the UST Inter-Library circulation service?

UST Inter-Library circulation service?

A: For the NationalChiaoTungUniversity: You can use the same library account number and password that you use for the National Tsing Hua University Library.

For the NationalCentralUniversity: Student account number is M+student number+0; you can use the same password and ID number. Same faculty and staff account number and password can be used as with your employee ID number.

For the NationalYangMingUniversity: If you are a first-time user, please go to the National Yang Ming University Library homepage and select View Your Circulation Records/ Renewal. Enter your ID number and PIN and click on Submit. You will then be able to enter your personal information and set your password.

V. Book Loan and Document Delivery Service

Q:What is the Book Loan and Document Delivery Service ?

A: If you are unable to find the material you need in the Library, you can request to have the materials photocopied or use the Book Loan and Document Delivery Service. You will be contacted by email when the material arrives, at which time you can collect it at the reference desk on the 1st floor of the Main Library and pay for any copies made.

Q:How do I apply for the Nationwide Document Delivery Service ?

A:All faculty, staff, and students of the NationalTsingHuaUniversity and thoseholding a valid borrowers card can apply for the Interlibrary Loan Service through Nationwide Document Delivery Service (NDDS) at http://ndds.stpi.org.tw/

  1. All faculty, staff, and students of the National Tsing Hua University and those holding a valid borrowers card can use this service.
  2. If you are a new user, you must first apply for an account number and a password. You will receive an email confirmation on the following day and be able to use this service.
  3. You can use the Union catalog to find out which library holds the material you are looking for.
  4. Send the Interlibrary Loan Service application request to the National Interlibrary Loan System.
  5. Receive a notification.
  6. Collect the material at the reference desk.

Q:How do I apply for the Rapid ILL, Service of Express Document Delivery?

A:

  1. Request for photocopies of western Journal articles only.
  2. First, check the NTHU Library Catalog and E-Resourceto make sure that the required materials are not available within the Library.
  3. Login to the RAPID ILL@NTHU requesting system and send your request online. Please login with your faculty/student/staff ID Number and Library Password.
  4. Please fill in the Journal title in its full name]no abbreviations^, corresponding ISSN and all the required fields in the request form and submit the application online. Your requests will then be forwarded to the RAPID ILL.
  5. You will be notified by an email when the requested item is available. It will be kept in the Main Library for you to pick up.(Office Hours: Mon-Fri 8:30-21:00)
